WHAT is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement.

Pilates, also termed “Contrology”, is presented as the art of controlled movements. If practiced with consistency, Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength, develops control and endurance in the whole human body. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, and developing a strong “powerhouse” or core, and improving coordination and balance.
Core strength and torso stability, along with the six Pilates principles, set the Pilates method apart from many other types of exercise. Ultimately those who really succeed at their sport learn to use their core muscles, but in Pilates this integrative approach is learned from the beginning.

Highly educated trainers, using specialised equipment, teach Pilates.

WHAT does a Pilates Instructor do?

Pilates instructors teach their clients to use their “powerhouse” throughout life’s daily activities. (The powerhouse is the centre of the body and if strengthened, it offers a solid foundation for any movement).
The Pilates system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced or to any other level. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.

One of the best things about the Pilates method is that it works so well for a wide range of people. Athletes, golfers, soccer, rugby players and dancers love it, as do seniors, women rebounding from pregnancy, and people who are at various stages of physical rehabilitation (especially for back rehabilitation).

Pilates also has brilliant results when combined with cross-training.

WHAT does a Pilates Instructor do?

Pilates exercises are done on either on a mat on the floor, Pilates mat work, or on specialized exercise equipment. The workout equipment that we use in Pilates generally utilizes pulleys and resistance from the participants own body weight on the machine and graduated levels of springs.
The Reformer and Wunda/Electric Chair is probably the best-known piece of resistance equipment that you will encounter at a Pilates studio.

EVOLVE HEALTH makes use of all the specialized Pilates equipment, including mat, ball, the Reformer and Wunda/Electric Chair!!!
